On Memorial Day, I had the honor of interviewing Mike Rognlien, author of This Is Now Your Company (my review of that book). Mike was a key HR leader for Facebook during their exponential growth (in part, building its industry-leading unconscious bias training), and is now Chief Builder of Awesome People at Multiple Hats Management.

A week and a half ago, I attended a 90 minute talk by Mike Rognlien in Denver thanks to VitalSmarts. A bonus was getting a free copy of Mike’s 2018 book, This Is Now Your Company. That unexpected gift was quite serendipitous given I’ll be presenting “Counterintuitive IT™: How Do We Change Culture?” at my company’s April 1st Agile Community of Interest meeting. As he did during his talk, Mike shares plenty of unexpected, consummate insights in Now This Is Your Company.
Why am I giving his work five stars? Because it is the right mix of focusing on what needs to change in companies, those you interact with, and (most importantly) in you. (Well, let’s be painfully honest and admit that it helped me focus on what needs to change in me. And there is plenty.)

A “must read” book for anyone is Crucial Conversatons. This video gives a great summary. Please check it out…but still read the book! 🙂
During a quick road trip this past weekend to Goodland, Kansas with my 11-year-old son, I finally opened Theory of Constraints by Eliyahu Goldratt. I didn’t read as much as I hoped (but you don’t go on a mini-vacation with your munchkin to ignore him). However, I loved Goldratt’s discussion of how change induces emotion (and what to do about it):
Let’s summarize once again this devastating process that connects improvements with emotional resistance.
Any improvement is change.
Leading to:
Any change is a perceived threat to security.
Leading to:
Any threat on security gives rise to emotional resistance.
Leading to:
Emotional resistance can only be overcome by a stronger emotion.
He then explains although that stronger emotion could be negative (“We are trying to overcome the immediate insecurity resulting from change, by provoking the long term insecurity of what will happen if we don’t change”), that’s not a good long-term plan. Instead, we want to develop an “emotion of the inventor” in people.
